Steve Williams knows a lot about golf.
As one of the foremost caddies in the history of the sport there’s not much he doesn’t know about it, including the kind of training regimen required to avoid injuries while playing.
Speaking to Bob McCown and John Shannon on Sportsnet 590 the FAN’s Prime Time Sports, Williams explained that, ironically, the many injuries Tiger Woods has succumbed to recently might be linked to his workout plan. Williams most famously caddied Woods from 1999-2011, a period that saw Woods win 13 of his 14 career major championships.
“Some of the heavy training that Tiger did on various activities were probably not conducive to the golf swing and some of the activities that he participated in away from the golf course may not have been conducive to the longevity of the golf swing,” Williams said. “Tiger is a phenomenal athlete, one of the fittest guys who have ever played the tour, but it’s interesting to think that a guy that’s one of the fittest and most dedicated to his health and fitness on the tour has had so many injuries – a lot more than a lot of players. So there’s something to be said to that.
“How far do you go as far as training for golf? Obviously you have to be flexible and the stronger you are, the better you are at hitting the ball out of the rough, but you’ve got to balance that and it’s a fine line.”
Woods hasn’t won a major since his 2008 victory at the U.S. Open. Various injuries, including most recently a back ailment, have kept the 40-year-old off the golf course for much of the past three years.
Williams is currently caddying for Adam Scott. With Williams in his corner, Scott won the 2013 Masters, and has seen his performances in most major championships take a turn for the better.
