SAN DIEGO — Mike Weir’s run at the Buick Invitational lasted just nine holes.
The lefty from Bright’s Grove, Ont., withdrew midway through his opening round Thursday because he was feeling ill.
Weir, who was paired with first-round leader Troy Matteson, started on the back nine of the South Course at Torrey Pines and was 4-over par when pulled out after nine holes.
"He did the classy thing," said Matteson, who shot a 65. "He finished nine holes where it wasn’t such a big issue. He didn’t leave in the middle of nine holes. He just handed me the card and said he really didn’t feel well. I knew that he didn’t."
The 37-year-old Weir was competing in his third event of 2008. He finished fourth at the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship and was 56th at last week’s Bob Hope Classic.
