Tiger heavy fave to win U.S. Open; Cdns longshots

David Hearn is at 250/1 to win the U.S. Open this week, best among Canadians (tied with Adam Hadwin).

Five Canadians are a part of the field for the U.S. Open this week, but oddsmakers don’t believe any of them has a snowball’s chance in Merion.

Instead, it’s world No. 1 Tiger Woods who is listed as the heavy favourite to win the major tournament at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Woods is at 9/2 on the odds to win the U.S. Open this week, according to OddsShark.com. He last managed to pull out a victory at a major back at this event in 2008 and Woods will be looking to add to his total of 14 career major titles (three of which have come at the U.S. Open in 2008, 2002, and 2000).

While Tiger is famed for his long shots off the tee, Canadians David Hearn and Adam Hadwin are two of the longshots on the betting menu. Both are 250/1, which is best among Canucks this week.

Seven times in his career Woods has managed a top-five finish at the U.S. Open, and he’s placed in the top 10 at the event eight times. Golf props at the sportsbooks heading into the tournament have Woods at EVEN odds to end up in the top five at Merion this week, and at -275 to finish in the top 10.

Looking to hedge your wager on Woods even further? He’s at -500 to finish in the top 20 at the event for the 14th time.

After Woods, it’s Phil Mickelson at 16/1 on the odds to win the U.S. Open, with each of Rory McIlroy, Matt Kuchar, and Graeme McDowell at 20/1, and both Adam Scott and Justin Rose at 22/1. McDowell was the U.S. Open champion in 2010, and McIlroy won the tournament in 2011.

Defending champion Webb Simpson is listed at 40/1 odds.

Elsewhere on the props board, Woods is the 8/1 favourite to be in the lead at Merion after the first round, with Mickelson, Scott, Kuchar, and McIlroy all back at 25/1 on that odds list. Woods is also the 11/4 favourite to be the top American player at the event.

As for the Canadians, veteran Mike Weir has made it into the U.S. Open field, and he joins Hearn, Hadwin, Mackenzie Hughes and Ryan Yip in Ardmore at the event this week.

Weir last played in the U.S. Open back in 2010, when he was tied for 80th place; his best career result was third in 2003. He is 500/1 to recapture some magic and win this year.
