Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Robert Bortuzzo will not receive any discipline from the NHL’s department of player safety after delivering a crushing hit to the head of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jerry D’Amigo.
During the Penguins’ 3-1 victory over the Leafs on Monday, Bortuzzo hit D’Amigo hard with his shoulder in the neutral zone as the winger lunged forward, lowering his head.
D’Amigo remained down for a while before being helped to the dressing room. He would return to the game, only to be hit again by Bortuzzo and skate off in pain. He did not return to action.
Although the 6’4″ Bortuzzo was dealt a minor penalty for illegal check to the head on the play, the league announced there will be no further punishment, describing the play as “unavoidable head contact on an otherwise full body hit.”
Bortuzzo has yet to earn a permanent spot in the Pens’ lineup, but he collected an assist on on Sidney Crosby’s game-winning goal.
