The international hockey family has welcomed a new member.
On Wednesday, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced that Bahrain has joined as the 83rd country in the IIHF.
Hockey first came to the country in 1992, and then the Bahrain Ice Hockey Federation was officially founded in 2009.
“Since its inception, Bahrain Ice Hockey has served as a beacon of unity and sportsmanship, transcending cultural boundaries and bringing together individuals with a shared passion for the game,” said Malak Janahi of the federation in a statement. “Over the years, through dedication and perseverance, the sport has steadily gained traction."
The country hopes to establish successful pro leagues for both men and women by 2028. Right now, there is a four-team Bahrain Ice Hockey League that is played in a 3x3 format on a smaller rink.
Bahrain currently boasts 58 male players and 15 female players.
