Assault charges for teen hockey player

OWEN SOUND, Ont. — A 16-year-old minor hockey player from western Ontario is to appear in a Walkerton, Ont., court today on a charge of assault with a weapon.

The accused, who cannot be identified, allegedly used his stick to knock a 15-year-old opponent unconscious with a cross-check to the back of the neck.

The alleged incident occurred in Jan. 22 game in Southhampton, Ont., between the midget-level Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs and the Saugeen Shores Storm

No penalty was called on the play because the alleged incident occurred behind the play.

The Arran-Elderslie teen was allowed to continue playing as a three-week investigation by the Ontario Minor Hockey Association got underway.

The league has since adopted a policy that states any player charged in either an on-ice or off-ice incident is automatically suspended until their case is dealt with, regardless if a penalty is called or not. (Owen Sound Sun Times)
