The Calgary Hitmen announced Steve Hamilton as the 10th head coach in franchise history.
Hamilton, signed to a multi-year deal, brings a decorated resume to the position having helped guide the Edmonton Oil Kings as an associate coach to three straight WHL Finals, two league championships in 2012 and 2014, culminating with a Memorial Cup title in 2014.
The 44-year-old has eight seasons of WHL experience including the last four as head coach of the Oil Kings. He has also served as a head coach and assistant with Hockey Canada working with the U17’s and U18’s in 2013, 2014 and again in 2017.
“My family and I are extremely excited about the move to Calgary,” said Hamilton. “The Hitmen have a tremendous organization with a great tradition of developing players and building talented, dynamic teams. I look forward to working with the existing coaching staff and the group of players we have assembled.”
Hamilton, a three-time AJHL Coach of the Year with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders in 2006 and Spruce Grove Saints in 2009 and 2010, spent 13 years as a teacher and hockey instructor with Donnan Elementary and Vimy Ridge Academy from 2001 to 2014.
“It was imperative to hire an individual with WHL head coaching experience and we believe Steve is a perfect fit,” said Hitmen General Manager Jeff Chynoweth.
“He is an excellent communicator whose teams are known for their hard work and structure. Together with our returning coaching staff we feel we have the right group of personnel for future success.”
