The Don Mills Flyers rallied from an early deficit to beat the Toronto Red Wings 6-5 in overtime to win the OHL Cup.
After the Red Wings jumped to a 4-1 lead early in the second period, the Flyers clawed back to tie the game 4-4 and then again 5-5 before Brennan Othmann scored the winner.
Shane Wright, who recently became the sixth player ever granted exceptional player status by the CHL, finished the night with a goal and two assists, including setting up Othmann on a two-on-one for the game winner.
“I just picked up the puck and gave it to Othmann and he did the rest,” Wright told Sportsnet’s Ron MacLean after the win. “The whole season I’ve been just doing that. I get a pretty easy apple just getting him the puck and letting him score.”
Othmann finished with two goals and an assist while Francesco Arcuri had two assists for the Flyers. Chandler Romeo, Francesco Pinelli and Ryan Gillespie all had three-point games for the Red Wings.
Sergei Litvinov made 15 saves on 17 shots to get the win in net for the Flyers after coming in mid-way through the first period for Anson Thornton, who gave up three goals on 10 shots. Josh Rosenzweig made 24 saves in a losing effort for the Red Wings.
