Edmonton, Red Deer to co-host 2021 IIHF World Juniors

Sam Cosentino sets his sights on the new-look World Juniors team that Canada has put together, with just two returning players from last year’s gold medal-winning tournament.

Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta. will co-host the 2021 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, reports Sportsnet’s John Shannon. Shannon adds an official announcement will come on Thursday.

This marks the third time Edmonton will host the annual under-20 international and the second time for Red Deer. Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary co-hosted the tournament in 1995, while Edmonton split hosting duties with Calgary in 2012.

The tournament will be held in Vancouver and Victoria this year and co-hosted by Ostrava and Třinec in the Czech Republic next year.

Teams are beginning to announce their preliminary rosters for this year’s event and Team Canada will open camp in Victoria on Dec. 10. Team Canada will then begin play on Dec. 26 against Denmark in Vancouver.
