Forsberg leads host Sweden past Switzerland

MALMO, Sweden — Filip Forsberg scored a goal and added an assist as host Sweden edged Switzerland 5-3 in preliminary round action at the World Junior championship.

Christian Djoos, Andreas Johnson, Oskar Sundqvist, and Lukas Bengtsson also scored for Sweden, and Jacob de la Rose helped with two assists.

Fabrice Herzog, Sandro Zangger, and Kevin Fiala responded for Switzerland.

Swiss goaltender Melvin Nyffeler made 31 saves in the losing effort, while his counterpart, Oskar Dansk, stopped 30 shots for the win.

Switzerland attacked first with a power-play goal from Zangger at 5:43 of the first period, but gave up the lead one minute later on Forsberg’s goal.

The Swiss squad took advantage of a Sweden penalty to tie the game 3-3 on Herzog’s goal at 1:01 of the third period, but the hosts fought back with two unanswered goals from Djoos and Johnson to seal the win.

Earlier, Canada downed Germany 7-2, Russia dominated Norway 11-0, and the U.S. beat the Czech Republic 5-1.
