SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — Adam Foote’s jersey now hangs with the best players ever to skate with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds officially retired Foote’s jersey on Saturday night in a ceremony prior to a game against the Windsor Spitfires.
Foote spent three seasons with the Greyhounds from 1988 to 1991.
"Just being back in the city, a lot has come to mind, a lot of things that I haven’t thought about in a long time," Foote said. "It’s been 20 years and it’s hard to believe that it’s been that long. The memories are definitely popping in. They were great memories."
Foote helped lead Sault Ste. Marie to its first of three straight Memorial Cup appearances in the 1990-91 season.
Foote had 37 goals and 162 points in 186 games with the Greyhounds after being selected in the second round of the 1988 OHL Draft.
A second-round pick of the Quebec Nordiques in the 1989 NHL Draft, Foote went on to play 19 years in the NHL before retiring after the 2010-11 season.
The 41-year-old Whitby, Ont., native has a pair of Stanley Cup titles — in 1996 and 2001 with the Colorado Avalanche — as well as an Olympic Gold Medal with Canada at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. He also won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2004 World Championship.
Foote posted 66 goals and 308 points along with 1534 penalty minutes in 1154 NHL games.
John Vanbiesbrouck (No. 1), Craig Hartsburg (No. 4), Ron Francis (No. 10) and Wayne Gretzky (No. 99) have also had their jerseys retired by the Greyhounds.
