Team Canada has announced the six coaches who will lead the country at the 2020 world junior championship and this summer’s 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Dale Hunter (London, OHL) will serve as head coach for Canada’s national junior team at the WJC, while André Tourigny (Ottawa, OHL) and Mitch Love (Saskatoon, WHL) will serve as his two assistants.

For the under-18 team, Dan Lambert (Spokane, WHL) will be the head coach, with assistants Mario Duhamel (Ottawa, OHL) and Dennis Williams (Everett, WHL) joining him on the bench.

“We are excited about the two coaching staffs that have been assembled for Canada’s national junior team and Canada’s national men’s summer under-18 team, both of which include a combination of Canadian Hockey League, National Hockey League and international coaching experience,” Shawn Bullock, director of men’s national teams for Hockey Canada, said in a press release.

“We know all six coaches will represent our country with a tremendous amount of pride as they look to bring home gold medals at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.”

Hunter has spent 18 seasons as owner, president and head coach of the London Knights, leading them to five Memorial Cup appearances and two championships. On three occasions he has been named the OHL’s coach of the year (2004, 2005, 2010) and left the Knights for part of the 2011-12 season to join the Washington Capitals as head coach. He returned to the OHL the following season. Hunter was head coach of Canada’s U18 in 2013 when they won gold at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup. He joins his brother Mark, who is serving as GM of Canada’s national junior team.

The WJC tournament will be held in the Czech Republic.

Lambert, 49, will serve as the next coach for the U18 team and has spent the past two years as head coach of the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the AHL’s Rochester Americans in 2016-17 and was an assistant with the Buffalo Sabres in 2015-16. In 2014-15 Lambert was the head coach of the Kelowna Rockets, winning the WHL championship and reaching the Memorial Cup final where they lost in overtime. Lambert was head coach of Team Red for Canada at the 2014 world under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup will again be held at Rogers Place in Edmonton from August 6-11.
