Hunter returning to coach London Knights

Dale Hunter is heading back to London to take over head coaching duties of the Knights.

The team’s president and co-owner left London in November to coach the Washington Capitals. He guided the Capitals to a first-round upset over the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins before falling to the Rangers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal.

After the season Hunter promptly quit the Capitals and said he would be returning to London, citing family reasons.

The three-time OHL coach of the year will take over for his brother Mark, who will return to his duties as the team’s general manager. Under Mark’s guidance, the Knights finished first in the OHL, won its second league title and advanced to its second MasterCard Memorial Cup, ultimately falling to Shawinigan in the final.

In 11 years behind the London bench since taking over coaching duties in 2011 Hunter has compiled a 451-189-23-25 record in 688 games, which is the current record for best winning percentage in OHL history.
