The Sudbury Wolves took a little suspense out of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection on Friday when they announced that they are taking Israeli-born David Levin of the Greater Toronto Hockey League’s (GTHL) Don Mills Flyers first overall.
But how about the rest of the first round?
Gabe Vilardi, a centre from the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIH Academy) of the Ontario East Minor Hockey League, went second to the Windsor Spitfires. Ryan McLeod, also a centre, from the 2015 OHL Cup champion Toronto Marlboros was taken third overall by the Flint Firebirds (formerly the Plymouth Whalers).
Vilardi and McLeod were named players of the year this season in their respective leagues with Vilardi scoring 39 points in 21 games and McLeod putting up 81 points in 74 games.
McLeod’s teammate, Matthew Strome, went eighth to another recently re-located team in the Hamilton Bulldogs (formerly the Belleville Bulls). He recorded 60 points in 64 games played with the Marlboros this season.
Strome is notable for a number of reasons. He scored the overtime-winner to clinch the OHL Cup.
And the last name should also be familiar to NHL fans. He is the younger brother of New York Islanders centre Ryan Strome and 2015 NHL Draft-eligible Erie Otters centre Dylan Strome, who both congratulated baby bro on the accomplishment.
