NHL Draft Diary: Draft day come, gone

The weekend of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has come and gone.

While I would be lying to you if I said I wasn’t disappointed, I am also mindful that there are multiple routes to the National Hockey League.

I appreciate all the support and advice I have received from multiple sources and I can assure you that your words have not fallen on deaf ears. As stated in one of my previous entries, my work habits and dedication to my craft have not, and will not change based solely on the results of one weekend.

For the rest of the summer, I will continue to workout twice a day until heading off to Brandon for another exciting season.

My teammate and roommate, Jordan Fransoo, was picked by Ottawa at No. 186 and he will join our leading scorer Mark Stone at camp, before returning to us and helping lead what will undoubtedly be a more successful campaign than last year.

We return every one of our defenceman along with a promising new crop of rookies hoping to make the team. We will no longer be the least experienced team in the Western Hockey League and with the heavy minutes that all of our young players played last year, a turnaround appears to be in short order.

I continue to be thankful that I was selected by Brandon in the WHL Bantam Draft in 2008.

Between the support I’ve received from my billets, teammates, the coaching staff and front office, as well as the town in general, I cannot imagine that a better place exists to play junior hockey.

The organization is commited to having a competitive team every year with a focus on developing players to be better people and I look forward to getting back as soon as possible.

In closing, I would like to thank Sportsnet for taking a flyer on me and my writing abilities and giving me the chance to share some thoughts with you over the last month.

I hope that you enjoyed my blog and I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer holiday.
