OHL Roundup: Merkley scores OT winner to lift Storm over Greyhounds


GUELPH, Ont. — Ryan Merkley scored 2:09 into overtime and the Guelph Storm recovered from blowing a three-goal lead to beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-3 on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Isaac Ratcliffe, Nate Schnarr and Cedric Ralph had first-period goals as Guelph (8-4-2) built a 3-0 lead.

Ryan Roth tied the game early in the third after Cullen McLean had pulled the Greyhounds (10-3-3) within one three minutes earlier. Morgan Frost started the comeback attempt with a goal in the second period.

Storm goaltender Anthony Popovich made 23 saves. Sault Ste. Marie’s Matthew Villalta stopped 27 shots.

Guelph was 0 for 5 on the power play while the Greyhounds scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

Sault Ste. Marie is on a nine-game point streak with seven wins and two overtime losses over that span.


ERIE, Pa. — Gera Poddubnyi scored his second goal of the night 1:16 into overtime as the Otters edged Mississauga.

Hayden Fowler also scored twice for Erie () and Brendan Sellan added a single.

Owen Tippett had a pair of goals for the Steelheads (), while Cole Carter and Keean Washkurak also found the back of the net.

67’S 4 WOLVES 3

OTTAWA — Kody Clark found the back of the net 2:10 into overtime as the 67’s completed a comeback win over Sudbury.

Graeme Clarke, Tye Felhaber and Merrick Rippon scored in regulation for Ottawa (12-3-1), which trailed 3-1 early in the second period.

David Levin led the Wolves (8-6-1) with two goals. Macauley Carson scored the other.

The 67’s have picked up at least one point in 10 straight games while Sudbury has lost three in a row.


HAMILTON — Brad Chenier scored twice as North Bay handed the Bulldogs their fourth straight loss.

Justin Brazeau had the other goal for the Battalion (8-7-0), who have won four in a row.

Nicolas Mattinen scored shorthanded for Hamilton (7-7-1) and Arthur Kaliyev also scored.


OWEN SOUND, Ont. — Jordan Frasca and Curtis Douglas each scored twice as Windsor downed the Attack.

Chris Playfair and Mathew MacDougall also scored for the Spitfires (6-8-1).

Markus Phillips had the lone goal for Owen Sound (8-6-1).


SARNIA, Ont. — Anthony Salinitri had two goals to lead as the Sting over Saginaw.

Nick Grima, Sean Josling and Kelton Hatcher also scored for Sarnia (7-6-1), which has won three straight.

Cole Perfetti, Cole Coskey and Aidan Prueter provided the offence for the Spirit (7-5-2).


FLINT, Mich. — Kyen Sopa struck twice and Niagara kept the Firebirds winless on the season.

Lleyton Moore, Billy Constantinou, Ivan Lodnia, Akil Thomas and Ben Jones supplied the rest of the offence for the IceDogs (9-4-2), who stretched their winning streak to four games.

Ty Dellandrea had the lone goal for Flint (0-13-1).


OSHAWA, Ont. — Serron Noel put away the winner at 5:51 of the third period as the Generals marched past Kingston.

Kyle MacLean, Tyler Tullio, Jack Studnicka and Matt Brassard also scored for Oshawa (8-5-1).

Ryan Cranford and Dawson Baker replied for the Frontenacs (4-11-1).
