OHL: Harper, Otters edge Storm

ERIE, Pa. — Stephen Harper scored the winner in the shootout as the Erie Otters edged the visiting Guelph Storm 3-2 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.

J.P. Labardo and Jimmy McDowell scored in regulation for the Otters (7-13-3) as Connor McDavid assisted on both.

Robby Fabbri and Brock McGinn each scored for the Storm (13-8-3) and Cody McNaughton chipped in with two assists.

Oscar Dansk stopped 47-of-49 shots for the win as Garret Sparks made 27 saves in a losing cause.

Erie went 2-for-6 on the power play while Guelph went 0-for-5.

Attack blank the Rangers 4-0

OWEN SOUND, Ont. — Jordan Binnington stopped all 35 shots he faced as the Owen Sound Attack blanked the visiting Kitchener Rangers 4-0 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.

Cameron Brace and Daniel Catenacci each had a goal and an assist for the Attack (15-4-3), who moved into first place in the Midwest Division, while Gemel Smith and Daniel Zweep each scored once.

John Gibson stopped 25-of-29 shots in a losing cause for the Rangers (14-6-2), who sit three points behind the Attack in the Midwest standings.

Owen Sound went 1-for-5 on the power play while Kitchener failed to score on eight chances with the man advantage.

Scheifele scores OT winner, as the Colts beat the Spitfires

BARRIE, Ont. — Mark Scheifele scored the overtime winner as the Barrie Colts edged the visiting Windsor Spitfires 6-5 in Ontario Hockey League action on Saturday night.

Scheifele had two goals and an assist for Barrie (16-5-1), while Ryan O’Connor, Anthony Camara, Josh MacDonald and Erik Bradford scored a goal apiece.

Zach Hall chipped in with three assists for the Colts.

Kerby Rychel, Josh Ho-Sang, Brady Vail, Chris Marchese and Ty Bilcke scored for Windsor (9-8-5), while Saverio Posa added a pair of assists.

Mathias Niederberger turned aside 28 shots in the win as Jaroslav Pavelka made 40 saves in a losing cause.

Both teams found success on the power play, with each squad going 2-for-4.

Battalion extend win streak to five

SAGINAW, Mich. — The Brampton Battalion extended their winning streak to five games as they downed the host Saginaw Spirit 4-1 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Jake Smith stopped all but one of the 25 shots he faced and was named the game’s first star.

Barclay Goodrow had a goal and an assist and Brandon Robinson, Patrik Machac and Nicholas Foglia added single goals for Brampton (11-8-5). Nick Paul chipped in with a pair of assists.

Jeremiah Addison’s first career OHL goal was the lone goal for Saginaw (9-12-3) as they dropped their second game in a row.

Robinson opened the scoring for Brampton at 5:38 of the first period.

Vincent Trocheck had a chance to tie the game at 7:38, after he was rewarded a penalty shot, but Smith was able to make the save.

Saginaw did manage late in the period to tie the game as Addison scored from the slot.

Machac scored what proved to be the winning goal, on the power play at 5:49 of the second period, and Foglia increased the lead to 3-1 at the 15:12 mark.

Goodrow scored the only goal in the third period as he buried an empty-net goal at 19:06.

Jake Paterson stopped 23-of-26 shots for the Spirit.

Brampton was 1-for-4 on the power play while Saginaw failed to score on either of its chances with the man advantage.

Cardwell scores OT winner as the Bulls edge Whalers

BELLEVILLE, Ont. — Jake Cardwell scored the winning goal in overtime for the Belleville Bulls as they beat the host Plymouth Whalers 3-2 on Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League action.

Brendan Gaunce and Jordan Subban scored in regulation for Belleville (12-7-3).

Alex Aleardi scored both goals for Plymouth (10-7-4).

After a scoreless first period, Aleardi broke to the outside with speed and put a wrist shot through the pads of Malcolm Subban.

Gaunce answered back with a goal of his own, taking a centering pass and banging home his sixth of the season.

The two clubs exchanged goals in the third period, starting with Belleville taking the lead on a point shot from Jordan Subban that found the back of the net.

Aleardi took just over a minute to knot things up again, stepping over the blue line and wristing a shot from the high slot that eluded Malcolm Subban’s glove.

Cardwell’s goal was his first in a Bulls’ uniform and came from a wrist shot inside the right face-off circle that beat Alex Nedeljkovic over the shoulder at 2:33 of overtime.

Malcolm Subban made 30 saves for the win while Nedeljkovic, in his OHL debut, stopped 25 shots in a losing cause.

Belleville went 1-for-4 on the power play while Plymouth went 0-for-8.

IceDogs down 67’s 4-2

OTTAWA — Steven Shipley had two goals and Ryan Strome had two assists Saturday as the Niagara IceDogs scored a 4-2 win over the Ottawa 67’s in Ontario Hockey League play.

The IceDogs trailed 2-1 late in the second period but got a power-play goal late in the period and then another early in the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Shipley then scored an insurance goal midway through the third to ice the win for the Dogs.

Brook Hiddink and Brett Ritchie also scored for the IceDogs (15-7-1) who have now won three straight.

The 67’s (6-14-2) got goals from Remy Giftopoulos and Brett Gustavsen in the loss, their sixth straight. They were also outshot 44-25 by the IceDogs and were kept in the game by the goaltending of Jacob Blair.

"I was happy with our effort and Jacob Blair gave us a chance to be in the game. We will learn from this and move on," said 67’s coach Chris Byrne.

The 67’s were 0-for-3 on the power play while the IceDogs went 2-for-7. Despite that stat, Niagara coach Marty Williamson wasn’t happy with his special teams.

"Our power play wasn’t good but we found a way to win because of our talent up front," he said.
