OHL Roundup: Otters erupt for 12 goals in rout of Firebirds

ERIE, Pa. – Kyle Maksimovich had three goals and an assist while Gera Poddubnyi added two goals and two helpers as the Erie Otters hammered the Flint Firebirds 12-1 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Emmett Sproule tacked on two goals and an assist for the Otters (1-0-0) as Ryan Martin, Joseph Mack, Jack Duff, Luke Beamish and Alex Gritz had the others. Christian Girhiny chipped in with four assists.

Ethan Keppen put the Firebirds (0-2-0) on the board midway through the third period when it was already 9-0 Erie.

Daniel Murphy made 21 saves for the win. Luke Cavallin allowed eight goals on 34 shots before giving way to Emanuel Vella, who stopped 4-of-8 shots in 14 minutes of relief.

The Otters were 2 for 2 on the power play while Flint failed to score on either of its chances with the man advantage.

BULLDOGS 4 COLTS 2

BARRIE, Ont. — Nick Donofrio turned away 28 shots as Hamilton doubled up the Colts in a game called in the final minute after Bulldogs head coach Dave Matsos collapsed and was taken to hospital in the third period.

The incident happened in the final seconds of the game and Matsos was immediately attended to by on-site paramedics. He was alert and responsive when transported to a local hospital for what the league said were "precautionary measures."

MacKenzie Entwistle, Nicolas Mattinen, Arthur Kaliyev and Isaac Nurse supplied the offence for the Bulldogs (1-1-0).

Luke Bignell and Joey Keane found the back of the net for Barrie (1-1-0). Maksim Zhukov stopped 26-of-29 shots in defeat.

ATTACK 3 WOLVES 0

OWEN SOUND, Ont. — Mack Guzda made 25 saves as the Attack shut out Sudbury.

Owen Sound (1-1-0) got goals from Mitchell Russel, Alan Lyszczarczyk and Kevin Hancock.

Jake McGrath turned aside 23-of-25 shots for the Wolves (1-1-0).

STING 6 SPIRIT 2

SAGINAW, Mich. — Anthony Salinitri and Jacob Perreault both struck twice as Sarnia downed the Spirit.

Jamieson Rees and Adam Ruzicka also scored for the Sting (1-0-0), who got 28 saves from Aidan Hughes.

Nicholas Porco and Albert Michnac replied for Saginaw (1-1-0). Cameron Lamour allowed three goals on 11 shots in the first period for the loss.

GREYHOUNDS 6 BATTALION 0

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — Matthew Villata made 33 saves and Alex Johnston struck twice as the Greyhounds blanked North Bay.

Zack Trott, Morgan Frost, Roman Pucek and Jordan Sambrook also scored for Sault Ste. Marie (1-1-0).

Christian Propp kicked out 35-of-41 shots for the Battalion (1-1-0).
