OHL Roundup: Owen Tippett’s hat trick lifts Spirit over Firebirds


SAGINAW, Mich. — Owen Tippett had a hat trick while Ryan McLeod and Blade Jenkins added a goal and three assists each as the Saginaw Spirit downed the Flint Firebirds 9-2 on Wednesday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Albert Michnac, Cole Perfetti, Damien Giroux and Bode Wilde also scored to help the Spirit (35-14-4) extend their win streak to five games.

Riley McCourt and Jake Durham found the back of the net for the Firebirds (10-42-4).

Tristan Lennox turned away 31 shots for Saginaw as Emanuel Vella combined with Luke Cavallin for 41 saves for Flint.

The Spirit went 2 for 3 on the power play while the Firebirds were 0 for 4 with the man advantage.


OWEN SOUND, Ont. — Aidan Dudas scored his second goal of the night at 2:17 of overtime as the Attack dealt Barrie its fourth loss in a row.

Daylon Groulx and Sergey Popov also scored while Andrew MacLean turned away 14 shots for Owen Sound (27-23-4).

Jacob Tortora struck twice and Aidan Brown had the other for the Colts (21-28-4). Jet Greaves made 41 saves in a losing cause.


OSHAWA, Ont. — Allan McShane broke a 3-3 deadlock at 14:28 of the third as the Generals doubled up Peterborough to improve to 6-0-1 in their last seven.

Tyler Tullio, Serron Noel, Nando Eggenberger, Brett Neumann and Anthony Salinitri also scored while Kyle Keyser made 19 saves for Oshawa (34-18-3).

Cameron Butler, Ryan Merkley and Nick Robertson had goals for the Petes (25-25-3). Hunter Jones turned aside 33-of-37 shots in defeat.


SUDBURY, Ont. — Isaak Phillips scored twice and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 34 saves as the Wolves extended their win streak to nine games with a victory over North Bay.

Macauley Carson, Adam Ruzicka and Shane Bulitka supplied the rest of the Sudbury (34-16-3) offence.

Brad Chenier and Brandon Coe scored for the Battalion (24-25-4). Christian Propp turned away 37 shots in defeat.


LONDON, Ont. — Joseph Raaymakers made 37 saves and Matvey Guskov struck twice as the Knights beat Guelph to avoid a third straight loss.

Adam Boqvist, Joey Keane, Josh Nelson and Sahil Panwar also scored for London (38-9-6).

Domenico Commisso broke up Raaymakers shutout bid at 18:59 of the third for the Storm (29-15-10), who got 26 saves from Anthony Popovich.


KINGSTON, Ont. — Sasha Chmelevski had a goal and an assist as Ottawa beat the Frontenacs to improve to 11-0-1 in its last 12 contests.

Austen Keating, Lucas Chiodo and Merrick Rippon also scored while Will Cranley made 19 saves for the 67’s (41-9-5).

Nick Wong struck twice in Kingston’s (12-41-2) 12th loss in a row. Brendan Bonello kicked out 29 shots in a losing cause.


HAMILTON — Arthur Kaliyev scored twice in regulation before Matthew Strome potted the shootout winner as the Bulldogs came from behind to snap Mississauga’s three-game win streak.

Tim Fleischer, Logan Morrison and Avery Hayes also scored for Hamilton (25-25-5), which trailed 5-3 midway through the third. Zachary Roy made 37 saves for the win.

Liam Ham, Cole Carter, James Hardie, Keean Washkurak and Alan Lyszczarczyk scored for the Steelheads (26-21-7). Jacob Ingham turned aside 28 shots in defeat.
