BARRIE, Ont. — Matt Rupert scored the shootout winner as the London Knights defeated the host Barrie Colts 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Kyle Platzer scored his first-career OHL goal for the Knights (6-3-1) and Josh Anderson scored the other for London.
Alex Broadhurst picked up an assist on each of his club’s regulation-time goals.
Anthony Camara and Aaron Ekblad replied for the Colts (9-2-1), who saw their eight-game winning streak snapped.
Mark Scheifele added an assist to bring his league-leading point total to 20.
Jake Patterson, in his first start of the season for London, made 26 saves for the win as Barrie’s Mathias Niederberger stopped 37 shots in a losing cause.
London went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Barrie finished 1-for-4.
WINDSOR 3, ERIE 2
ERIE, Pa. (CP) — Kerby Rychel scored twice, including the game winner, as the Windsor Spitfires edged the host Erie Otters 3-2 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.
Derek Schoenmakers also scored for the Spitfires (6-4-3) while Chris Marchese and Josh Ho-Sang chipped in with two assists each.
Jimmy McDowell scored once for the Otters (3-7-2) and Connor McDavid extended his point streak to 10 games by scoring the other.
Forward Connor Brown earned an assist on each of his club’s goals.
Jaroslav Pavelka only had to make 17 saves for the win as Devin Williams turned away 36-of-39 shots in defeat.
Windsor went 2-for-5 on the power play while Erie scored once on three chances with the man advantage.
NIAGARA 4, KINGSTON 2
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (CP) — Brett Ritchie scored twice, including the game-winning goal, as the Niagara IceDogs came from behind to defeat the visiting Kingston Frontenacs 4-2 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.
Shayne Rover and Joel Wigle also scored for the IceDogs (8-4-1), who trailed 2-0 early in the first period, and Dougie Hamilton chipped in with two assists.
Hamilton now has four goals and 14 points in 13 games, which leads all OHL defencemen in scoring.
Billy Jenkins and Trevor Morbeck each scored for the Frontenacs (5-5-0), who have now dropped back-to-back contests.
Christopher Festarini made 35 saves for the win as Colin Furlong stopped 37-of-40 shots in a losing cause.
Niagara went 1-for-3 on the power play while Kingston failed to score on either of its opportunities with the man advantage.
KITCHENER 5, SARNIA 3
SARNIA, Ont. (CP) — Tobias Rieder scored two goals, including the game winner, as the Kitchener Rangers defeated the host Sarnia Sting 5-3 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.
Eric Ming, Ryan Murphy and Darcy Llewellyn also scored for the Rangers (5-4-1) while Ben Thomson chipped in with two assists.
Reid Boucher, Alex Galchenyuk and Nikolay Goldobin each scored for the Sting (5-6-1), who have now dropped three games in a row.
John Gibson made 26 saves for the win as Brodie Barrick stopped 26-of-30 shots in a losing cause.
Neither club could produce on the power play as Kitchener went 0-for-1 and Sarnia 0-for-3
OSHAWA 2, OWEN SOUND 1
OWEN SOUND, Ont. (CP) — Daniel Altshuller stopped 26-of-27 shots as the Oshawa Generals edged the host Owen Sound Attack 2-1 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.
Scott Laughton’s goal 9:42 into the second period stood up as the winner for the Generals (8-3-1) while Geoffrey Schemitsch had the other.
Gemel Smith scored the lone goal for the Attack (8-2-1), who had their winning streak halted at five games.
Jordan Binnington turned away 27 shots in a losing cause for Owen Sound.
Oshawa failed to score on four chances with the man advantage while Owen Sound went 1-for-4.
GUELPH 8, SAGINAW 5
Saginaw, Mich. (CP) — Matt Finn scored twice and set up one more as the Guelph Storm downed the host Saginaw Spirit 8-5 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.
The 18-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs prospect now has five goals and 12 points in 11 games, which is good for second in scoring for OHL defenceman. He sits two points behind the Niagara IceDogs’ Dougie Hamilton, who has 14 points in 13 games.
Hunter Garlent had one goal and three assists for the Storm (8-2-1), who won their fourth straight contest, and Jason Dickinson had a goal and two assists.
Tanner Richard and Scott Kosmachuk each had a goal and an assist while Zack Mitchell and Cody McNaughton each scored once to round out Guelph’s offence.
Eric Locke led the Storm (4-6-2) offensively with two goals and two assists, Vincent Trocheck had a goal and an assist while Garret Ross and Sam Povorozniouk scored a goal apiece.
Garret Sparks made 41 saves for the win as Jake Paterson allowed all eight goals against on 40 shots in a losing cause.
Guelph was successful with its power play as they went 3-for-5. Saginaw went 1-for-7.
Finn opened the scoring 5:47 into the first period.
Locke responded for the Spirit at 12:06, but Mitchell scored in the final minute of the period to give Guelph a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Richard and Garlent scored early in the second period to increase the Storm’s lead to three goals, however Ross and Locke scored two minutes apart to make it 4-3 Guelph.
McNaughton and Finn added two more goals for the Storm to make it 6-3 heading into the final period.
Trocheck scored for Saginaw 3:03 into the third, but power-play goals from Dickinson and Kosmachuk that came just 18 seconds apart stopped any chance of the Spirit making a comeback.
Povorozniouk added one more to the board for Saginaw with 1:29 to play in the game.
