OHL Roundup: Thomas leads IceDogs past Spirit for shootout win

SAGINAW, Mich. — Akil Thomas scored in regulation time and then again in the shootout as the Niagara IceDogs edged the Saginaw Spirit 3-2 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Jonah De Simone also scored for the IceDogs (8-4-2) in the first period and Bradey Johnson added a goal in the shootout.

Albert Michnac and Brady Gilmour had back-to-back goals in the second period for the Spirit (7-4-2).

Stephen Dhillon stopped 36 shots for the win. Cameron Lamour combined with Ivan Prosvetov for 29 saves for Saginaw.

Niagara went 0 for 4 on the power play and the Spirit were 1 for 3 with the man advantage.

STING 6 FIREBIRDS 5 (OT)

FLINT, Mich. — Ryan McGregor scored in overtime as Sarnia kept the Firebirds winless to open the season.

Mitch Eliot struck twice for the Sting (6-6-1), while Sean Josling, Hugo Leufvenius and Jacob Perreault also scored.

Connor Roberts and Ethan Keppen had two goals apiece for Flint (0-12-1) and Jack Phibbs also found the back of the net.

KNIGHTS 4 FRONTENACS 1

KINGSTON, Ont. — Cole Tymkin’s power-play goal in the first period was the eventual winner as London outpaced the Frontenacs.

Gerard Keane, William Lochead and Alec Regula also scored for the Knights (7-4-2).

Ian Derungs replied for Kingston (4-10-1).

BATTALION 5 OTTERS 2

ERIE, Pa. — Matthew Struthers had a hat trick, including the power-play winner, as North Bay topped the Otters.

Justin Brazeau and Brandon Coe also scored for the Battalion (7-7-0).

Chad Yetman and Gera Poddubnyi scored for Erie (5-7-1).

RANGERS 3 GENERALS 2

OSHAWA, Ont. — Jonathan Yantsis had a pair of goals as Kitchener slipped past the Generals.

Alexey Lipanov also scored for the Rangers (7-5-2).

Tyler Tullio and Kyle MacLean supplied the offence for Oshawa (7-5-1).

ATTACK 5 PETES 2

OWEN SOUND, Ont. — Nick Suzuki scored twice as the Attack subdued Peterborough.

Griffin Wilson, Aidan Dudas and Jackson Doherty rounded out the attack for Owen Sound (8-5-1).

Nick Robertson and Adam Timleck scored for the Petes (9-7-0).

COLTS 6 SPITFIRES 1

BARRIE, Ont. — Lucas Chiodo had two goals and an assist as the Colts routed Windsor.

Matej Pekar, Ryan Suzuki, Tyson Foerster and Jason Willms chipped in as well for Barrie (8-6-1).

Mathew MacDougall responded for the Spitfires (5-8-1).
