Point named Canadian captain for world juniors

Mitch Marner saved the day for Canada, scoring in the late stages of the third period to negate Sweden’s comeback from down 5-1, giving Canada a 7-6 win.

HELSINKI — Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Point was named captain of Canada’s team at the world junior hockey championship on Thursday.

Point learned he’d be captain after an autograph session at the team hotel in Helsinki, Finland, where the tournament is being held.

Point will be assisted by winger Lawson Crouse and defenceman Joe Hicketts. All three are returning from last year’s gold-medal winning team.

"These three players have set a tremendous example for the rest of our team from the start of our camp," said head coach Dave Lowry. "The leadership, work ethic and attention to detail shown by Brayden, Lawson and Joe are the standard for their teammates."

The team has not won in Europe since 2008 — the fourth of five consecutive gold medals for Canada’s junior team from 2005-09.

Canada opens the tournament against the United States on Saturday.
