QMJHL: Balmas scores on OT penalty shot as Screaming Eagles edge Oceanic


SYDNEY, N.S. – Mitchell Balmas scored on a penalty shot 1:37 into overtime as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles edged the Rimouski Oceanic 4-3 on Thursday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Wilson Forest, Mathias Laferriere and Gabriel Proulx scored in regulation time for the Screaming Eagles (5-6-1). Kevin Mandolese turned aside 19 shots for Cape Breton.

Olivier Garneau struck twice for Rimouski (7-4-1) and Anthony Gagnon also found the back of the net.

Colten Ellis kicked out 23 shots for the Oceanic.

Cape Breton went 0 for 3 on the power play and Rimouski was 1 for 2 with the man advantage.


SHERBROOKE, Que. — Thomas Sigouin stopped all 16 shots he faced as the Phoenix blanked Acadie-Bathurst.

Edouard St-Laurent scored twice, including the winner, for Sherbrooke (5-5-1). Benjamin Tardif also had a pair of goals, while Samuel Poulin and Alex-Olivier Voyer chipped in as well.

Tyriq Outen turned away 41 shots for Acadie-Bathurst (3-7-0).


DRUMMONDVILLE, Que. — Joseph Veleno struck twice, including the eventual winner, as the Voltigeurs topped Val-d’Or.

Xavier Simoneau and Pavel Koltygin also scored for Drummondville (8-4-0).

Alexandre Couture was the lone scorer for the Foreurs (2-8-1).


CHICOUTIMI, Que. — Vladislav Kotkov supplied the game-winning goal for the Sagueneens downed Quebec.

Hendrix Lapierre, Jeremy Fortin, Jesse Sutton and Jeremy Groleau rounded out the attack for Chicoutimi (6-3-2).

Olivier Mathieu and Andrew Coxhead scored for the Remparts (5-5-1).
