Spitfires’ Johnson charged with sexual assault

Ben Johnson was drafte 90th overall by the Devils in 2012.

WINDSOR, Ont. — Police in Windsor, Ont., have laid two charges of sexual assault against a player with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League.

Ben Johnson, 18, appeared in court Monday after a 16-year-old girl alleged she was attacked in the women’s washroom of a downtown nightclub during St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

A second charge was laid after a 20-year-old woman contacted police Monday claiming she had been assaulted three weeks ago in a Windsor bar.

Johnson, a left-winger, signed with the Spitfires as a free agent and was the 2011 Hobey Baker Character Award winner.

The Michigan native was drafted with the 90th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

A statement from the Spitfires organization says the team is aware of the accusations but will not comment while the case is before the courts.
