WHL Roundup: Giants beat Cougars to clinch playoff spot

LANGLEY, B.C. – The Vancouver Giants are the third Western Hockey League club to clinch a playoff spot.

David Tendeck made 32 saves as Vancouver downed the Prince George Cougars 4-1 on Sunday, extending its win streak to five games while securing a post-season berth for the second year in a row.

Davis Koch, Jared Dmytriw, Justin Sourdif and Tristen Nielsen supplied the offence for the Giants (37-13-3).

Ethan Browne was the lone skater to beat Tendeck for the Cougars (16-32-6), who have dropped 13 straight contests.

Taylor Gauthier kicked out 25 shots in a losing cause.

Vancouver defenceman Bowen Byram chipped in with two assists before getting ejected for checking to the head at 13:48 of the third.

The Giants went 1 for 3 on the power play while the Cougars were 1 for 5 with the man advantage.

The Everett Silvertips and Prince Albert Raiders have also clinched a playoff spot.

OIL KINGS 5 PATS 2

EDMONTON — Andrew Fyten scored once and set up two more as the Oil Kings toppled Regina.

David Kope, Carter Souch, Scott Atkinson Trey Fix-Wolansky also scored while Dylan Myskiw made 34 saves for Edmonton (30-16-8).

Austin Pratt and Logan Nijhoff found the back of the net for the Pats (15-37-3). Max Paddock stopped 40-of-44 shots in a losing cause.

BLADES 6 WHEAT KINGS 3

SASKATOON — Riley McKay and Chase Wouters each scored twice as the Blades doubled up Brandon to improve to 8-0-2 in their last 10 games.

Kyle Crnkovic and Dawson Davidson also scored while Max Gerlach tacked on three helpers for Saskatoon (34-13-8). Nolan Maier made 25 saves for the win.

Linden McCorrister, Stelio Mattheos and Ridly Greig scored for the Wheat Kings (23-22-7). Jiri Patera turned aside 31-of-35 shots in a losing effort.

HITMEN 6 WARRIORS 2

CALGARY — James Malm, Mark Kastelic and Kaden Elder had a goal and an assist apiece as the Hitmen beat Moose Jaw.

Tye Carriere, Riley Stotts and Cael Zimmerman also scored for Calgary (28-20-5). Carl Stankowski turned away 20 shots for the win.

Keenan Taphorn and Josh Brook hit the scoresheet for the Warriors (30-14-8). Brodan Salmond made 33 saves in defeat.

TIGERS 2 WINTERHAWKS 1 (SO)

PORTLAND, Ore. — Ryan Chyzowski scored the lone shootout goal as Medicine Hat edged the Winterhawks to improve to 4-0-1 in its last five games.

Ryan Jevne scored in the third to force extra time for the Tigers (31-18-5), who got 32 saves from Mads Sogaard.

Joachim Blichfeld opened the scoring for Portland (33-16-6). Shane Farkas turned aside 38 shots in defeat.
