WHL Roundup: Oil Kings rally to OT win over Hitmen

EDMONTON — Trey Fix-Wolansky sparked the comeback and assisted on Colton Kehler’s winner 18 seconds into overtime as the Edmonton Oil Kings snapped a five-game slide, beating the Calgary Hitmen 4-3 on Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Fix-Wolansky put his team on the board at 9:09 of the second period before setting up three more goals as Edmonton scored four straight to erase a 3-0 deficit. Kobe Mohr and Tomas Soustal also had goals for the Oil Kings (19-37-8).

Zach Huber, Jake Kryski and Jakob Stukel built up a three-goal lead for the Hitmen (19-35-9).

Josh Dechaine made 26 saves for Edmonton as Nick Schneider turned aside 25 shots for Calgary.

The Oil Kings went 2 for 6 on the power play while the Hitmen went 0 for 2 with the man advantage.

REBELS 5 ICE 4 (SO)

RED DEER, Alta. — Mason McCarty scored in regulation, then added the shootout winner as the Rebels dealt Kootenay its sixth straight defeat.

Alex Morozoff, Reese Johnson and Chris Douglas also scored for Red Deer (24-28-13), which got 27 saves from Riley Lamb.

Colton Kroeker, Michael King, Colton Veloso and Brett Davis supplied the offence for the Ice (25-37-4). Matt Berlin made 13 saves in a losing effort.

BLAZERS 5 GIANTS 1

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Luc Smith scored twice and tacked on an assist as the Blazers toppled Vancouver.

Connor Zary, Ryley Appelt and Brady Reagan also scored while Dylan ferguson stopped 30 shots for Kamloops (29-32-5).

Ty Ronning was the lone Giants (32-22-9) skater to beat Ferguson. David Tendeck kicked out 31 shots in a losing cause.

RAIDERS 5 BRONCOS 4 (SO)

SWIFT CURRENT, Alta. — Curtis Meger made 32 saves and Parker Kelly scored the shootout winner as Prince Albert edged the Broncos for its fifth win in a row.

Jordy Stallard had a goal and two helpers in regulation while Sergei Sapego, Brayden Pachal and Vojtech Budik also scored for the Raiders (28-25-11).

Giorgio Estephan had a pair of goals for Swift Current (45-15-5). Kaden Elder and Matteo Gennaro also scored as Stuart Skinner made 34 saves in defeat.

WHEAT KINGS 4 WARRIORS 2

BRANDON, Man. — Ty Lewis scored a hat trick as the Wheat Kings doubled up Moose Jaw.

Logan Thompson turned away 41 shots while Stelio Mattheos also found the back of the net for Brandon (34-25-5).

Barrett Sheen and Justin Almeida struck for the Warriors (47-14-3). Adam Evanoff stopped 13-of-15 shots in 46:39 of relief to get hit with the loss.

HURRICANES 5 BLADES 3

SASKATOON — Jake Elmer’s second goal of the night at 14:11 of the third period lifted Lethbridge over the Blades.

Taylor Ross also scored twice while Logan Flodell made 43 saves for the Hurricanes (32-25-6), winners of three straight. Jordy Bellerive had the other goal.

Braylon Shmyr, Bradly Goethals and Eric Florchuk replied for Saskatoon (31-30-3). Nolan Maier stopped 27-of-31 shots in defeat.

COUGARS 2 ROYALS 1 (OT)

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Ryan Schoettler put his team ahead for good at 4:04 of overtime as the Cougars beat Victoria for their third straight win.

Joel Lakusta also scored for Prince George (23-33-8) while Taylor Gauthier made 32 saves for the victory.

Noah Gregor replied for the Royals (35-24-6), who are on a four-game slide. Griffen Outhouse turned aside 36 shots in defeat.

SILVERTIPS 4 ROCKETS 2

EVERETT, Wash. — Connor Dewar scored twice, including the winner with less than four to play in regulation, as the Silvertips doubled up Kelowna.

Carter Hart made 22 saves while Matt Fonteyne and Patrick Bajkov also scored for Everett (42-18-5).

Carsen Twarynski and Kole Lind scored for the Rockets (38-21-6). Brodan Salmond stopped 36 shots in defeat.

CHIEFS 5 AMERICANS 4 (OT)

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Jaret Anderson-Dolan broke a tie at 3:51 of overtime as Spokane beat Tri-City for its fourth win in a row.

Ethan McIndoe, Dalton Hamaliuk, Filip Kral and Jake McGrew also scored for the Chiefs (37-21-5). Dawson Weatherill got the win with 36 saves.

Morgan Geekie struck twice and Jordan Topping and Dylan Coghlan had the other Americans (32-22-9) goals. Patrick Dea made 33 saves in a losing cause.

THUNDERBIRDS 5 WINTERHAWKS 4 (SO)

PORTLAND, Ore. — Noah Philp had two goals and two assists in regulation, then scored in the shootout as Seattle got by the Winterhawks.

Zack Andrusiak scored twice and Donovan Neuls had the other Thunderbirds (30-24-9) goal. Liam Hughes made 36 saves for the victory.

Ty Kolle, Cody Glass, Joachim Blichfeld and Ryan Hughes scored for Portland (38-20-5). Cole Kehler stopped 29 shots in defeat.
