WHL Roundup: Pats beat Raiders in shootout for sixth straight win

REGINA – Max Paddock stopped 31 shots through regulation and overtime, then turned away all three skaters in the shootout as the Regina Pats extended their win streak with a 3-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday in Western Hockey League action.

Jesse Gabrielle scored the lone goal of the shootout to give Regina its sixth straight win. The 2018 Memorial Cup hosts are 9-1-0 in their last 10 and sit third in the Eastern Conference.

Sam Steel and Cameron Hebig scored in regulation for the Pats (39-25-6).

Jordy Stallard and Regan Nagy replied for the Raiders (32-25-13), who have earned at least a point in 11 straight games (9-0-2). Curtis Meger stopped 33-of-35 shots in defeat.

Regina went 0 for 4 on the power play while Prince Albert failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

BLADES 5 BRONCOS 2

SWIFT CURRENT, Alta. — Max Gerlach scored twice and Kirby Dach had a goal and three assists as Saskatoon dealt the Broncos their third loss in a row.

Michael Farren and Braylon Shmyr also scored for the Blades (33-33-4), who got a 42-save performance from Tyler Brown.

Kaden Elder and Matteo Gennaro found the back of the net for Swift Current (47-17-6). Stuart Skinner turned away 22 shots in defeat.

HITMEN 3 ICE 2 (SO)

CALGARY — Jesse Makaj’s 29 saves against the Hitmen weren’t enough to help Kootenay avoid its 11th straight loss.

Mark Kastelic and Riley Stotts scored for Calgary (23-36-11) while Matthew Armitage turned aside 25 shots for the win.

Brett Davis and Alec Baer supplied the offence for the Ice (25-38-7).

REBELS 5 HURRICANES 2

RED DEER, Alta. — Kristian Reichel had two goals and two helpers as the Rebels won their third game in a row by beating Lethbridge.

Josh Tarzwell, Brandon Hagel and Reese Johnson also scored while Riley Lamb made 32 saves for Red Deer (27-30-13).

Zane Franklin and Jake Elmer had goals for the Hurricanes (32-32-6), who are on a seven-game slide. Reece Klassen stopped 20 shots in a losing cause.

GIANTS 4 BLAZERS 1

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Trent Miner kicked out 39-of-40 shots as Vancouver handed the Blazers their fourth loss in a row.

Ty Ronning, Davis Koch, Milos Roman and Tyler Benson scored for the Giants (36-25-9).

Jermaine Loewen was the lone scorer for Kamloops (29-36-5). Dylan Ferguson stopped 30-of-33 shots in defeat.

ROCKETS 6 COUGARS 3

KELOWNA, B.C. — Cal Foote scored twice and added an assist as the Rockets toppled Prince George.

Dillon Dube, Nolan Foote, Kaedan Korczak and Braydyn Chizen also scored for Kelowna (41-22-7). James Porter made 15 saves for the win.

Aaron Boyd, Brogan O’Brien and Ryan Schoettler scored for the Cougars (23-38-9), losers of six straight. Taylor Gauthier stopped 44 shots in defeat.

Prince George had two players ejected at 8:41 of the third. Joel Lakusta was given a major and game misconduct for checking to the head while Cameron MacPhee took a match penalty for attempting to injure.

THUNDERBIRDS 6 CHIEFS 3

SPOKANE, Wash. — Sami Moilanen had a pair of goals and an assist and Liam Hughes turned away 37 as Seattle doubled up the Chiefs.

Jake Lee, Samuel Huo, Matthew Wedman and Zack Andrusiak also scored for the Thunderbirds (33-26-10).

Jaret Anderson-Dolan struck twice and Hudson Elynuik had the other for Spokane (39-24-6). Bailey Brkin combined with Dawson Weatherill for 23 saves in defeat.
