WHL Roundup: Raiders crush Chiefs, pick up fifth straight win

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Sean Montgomery scored once and set up two more as the Prince Albert Raiders beat the Spokane Chiefs 8-2 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Noah Gregor and Jakob Brook had a pair of goals apiece as league-leading Prince Albert picked up its fifth win in a row.

Konrad Belcourt, Zack Hayes and Aliaksei Protas rounded out the offence while Ian Scott made 32 saves for the Raiders (12-1-0).

Nolan Reid and Erik Atchison scored for the Chiefs (6-3-3). Dawson Weatherill allowed eight goals against on 38 shots to take the loss.

Prince Albert went 2 for 7 on the power play while Spokane scored once on five chances with the man advantage.

Chiefs defenceman Bobby Russell picked up a major and game misconduct at the final buzzer for checking to the head.


VICTORIA — Roman Basran made 24 saves and Conner Bruggen-Cate scored the first of four unanswered goals as Kelowna beat the Royals.

The Rockets (3-9-0) also got goals from Nolan Foote, Ted Brennan, Liam Kindree and Ethan Ernst.

Kaid Oliver kept Victoria (8-2-0) form being shut out. Brock Guild turned aside 23-of-27 shots in defeat.


VANCOUVER — Brendan De Jong scored the winner at 1:16 of overtime as Portland squeezed by the Giants.

Reece Newkirk also scored while Shane Farkas made 18 saves for the Winterhawks (7-3-1).

Yannik Valento scored to help Vancouver (9-2-2) pick up at least a point in its ninth straight game, going 7-0-2. Trent Miner had 31 saves in defeat.


KENT, Wash. — Sasha Mutala scored at 1:46 of overtime as Tri-City downed Seattle.

Mitchell Brown and Riley Sawchuck also scored for the Americans (6-4-0). Beck Warm had 22 saves for the victory.

Andrej Kukuca and Matthew Wedman responded for the Thunderbirds (6-2-2). Liam Hughes turned away 27 shots in defeat.


RED DEER, Alta. — Alexander Alexeyev scored at 1:15 of the extra period as the Rebels handed Kootenay its fifth loss in a row.

Etah Anders made 29 saves while Carson Sass, Brandon Hagel and Oleg Zaytsev had the others for Red Deer (7-3-1).

Jaeger White struck twice and Brett Davis added a single for the Ice (3-4-3). Duncan McGovern made 28 saves in a losing cause.


LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Ty Kolle had a goal and two helpers and Reece Klassen made 39 saves as the Hurricanes halted Medicine Hat’s win streak at three games.

Nolan Jones, Dylan Cozens, Zachary Cox, Jadon Joseph, Logan Barlage, Jordy Bellerive and Taylor Ross also scored for Lethbridge (5-4-3).

Ryan Jevne, Elijah Brown and Tyler Preziuso found the back of the net for the Tigers (6-6-1). Jordan Hollett gave up seven goals on 31 shots for the loss.


BRANDON, Man. — Mark Kastelic scored his second of the night 45 seconds into overtime to lift Calgary over the Wheat Kings.

Luke Prokop and Luke Coleman also scored for the Hitmen (4-6-2) as Jack McNaughton made 28 saves for the win.

Connor Gutenberg, Baron Thompson and Chad Nychuc supplied the offence for Brandon (6-1-3). Ethan Kruger stopped 29 shots in defeat.


REGINA — Tristin Langan broke a 2-2 tie at 12:39 of the third as Moose Jaw edged the Pats.

Tate Popple and Ryan Peckford also scored while Adam Evanoff made 31 saves for the Warriors (5-3-2).

Austin Pratt and Jake Leschyshyn replied for Regina (3-8-0). Max Paddock kicked out 22 shots in a losing cause.
