WHL Roundup: Sam Steel’s hat trick leads Regina over Edmonton

EDMONTON — Sam Steel had three goals and an assist as the Regina Pats took advantage of their power-play chances to beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-4 on Sunday in Western Hockey League action.

Jake Leschyshyn scored twice while Cameron Hebig and Emil Oksanen each chipped in with three helpers for Regina (35-25-6), which will host the 2018 Memorial Cup.

Nick Henry and Cale Fleury also scored as the Pats improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10.

Tomas Soustal, Trey Fix-Wolansky, Kobe Mohr and Matthew Robertson scored for the Oil Kings (19-38-8), who sit last in the 22-team league.

Ryan Kubic started in net for Regina and stopped all seven shots he faced in the first period before giving way to Max Paddock, who stopped 17-of-21 shots in 40 minutes. Josh Dechaine stopped 36-of-43 shots for Edmonton.

The Pats went 5 for 5 on the power play while the Oil Kings scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

LANGLEY, B.C. — Kevin Davis scored two of his team’s four second-period goals and Dustin Wolf made 28 saves as Everett toppled Vancouver.

Bryce Kindopp, Connor Dewar, Garrett Pilon and Riley Sutter also scored for the Silvertips (44-18-5), who have won three straight and are 8-1-1 in their last 10.

Jared Dmytriw found the back of the net for the Giants (33-23-9). Trent Miner kicked out 31 shots in a losing cause.

CRANBROOK, B.C. — James Hamblin scored the winner while shorthanded at 17:54 of the third period as Medicine Hat edged Kootenay to improve to 6-0-1 in its last seven.

Elijah Brown, Ryan Chyzowski and Josh Williams also scored for the Tigers (34-24-8), who got a 38-save outing from Michael Bullion.

Colton Kroeker, Bobby Russell and Jonathan Smart supplied the goals for the Ice (25-38-4), who have lost eight in a row. Duncan McGovern made 24 saves in defeat.

HITMEN 6 REBELS 2

CALGARY — Jakob Stukel had two goals and two assists and Matthew Armitage made 30 saves as the Hitmen beat Red Deer to snap a five-game slide.

Calgary (20-35-10) scored six times in the third period for the win, with its other goals coming from Dakota Krebs, Riley Stotts, Mark Kastelic and Zach Huber.

Brandon Hagel and Reese Johnson built up a 2-0 lead for the Rebels (24-30-13). Ethan Anders turned aside 34-of-39 shots in a losing cause.

WINTERHAWKS 7 THUNDERBIRDS 4

KENT, Wash. — Kieffer Bellows scored a hat trick and Cody Glass had a goal and three helpers as Portland beat Seattle to extend its point streak to six games.

Jake Gricius, Ryan Hughes and Brendan De Jong also scored while Shane Farkas made 32 saves for the Winterhawks (40-20-5), who are 5-0-1 on their run.

Nolan Volcan paced the Thunderbirds (30-25-10) with a pair of goals while Mike MacLean and Zack Andrusiak had the others. Dorrin Luding stopped 31-of-37 shots in defeat.
