The first player breaks 100, the Calder favourite adds a couple more and the deadline’s best acquisition strikes again.
Here are three things we learned in the NHL on Tuesday night.
McDavid hits triple digits
In the first 10 minutes of the game between the Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets, Connor McDavid had already recorded three points (one goal, two assists), pushing him over the 100-point mark on the season.
This gives him back-to-back 100-point seasons in just his third year in the league, making him the eighth player in NHL history to achieve the feat twice at the age of 21 or younger.
He’s also the first player to post two straight 100-point seasons since Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin did so from 2008-10.
McDavid’s impressive stat line now stands at 40 goals and 62 assists through 77 games. Last season he had an even 100 through 82 games and captured the Hart, Ted Lindsay Award and Art Ross Trophy.
Kane continues to light it up for Sharks
Evander Kane just may be the best deadline pickup of the 2017-18 season.
Kane opened up the scoring in the San Jose Sharks’ game against the St. Louis Blues with his ninth goal in his 14th game since being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline. He now has 14 points as a Shark.
Since the trade, the rest of the team has been on fire, too. They’ve scored at least five goals in a game seven times, putting them on a nine-game point streak, with the only overtime loss coming Tuesday night against the Blues.
Barzal increases Calder chances
It’s been long speculated that New York Islanders rookie Mathew Barzal is going to walk away with the Calder for rookie of the year.
He picked up two more assists in the Islanders’ 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators to give him 20 goals and 58 assists through his first 77 games.
With his two assists, he passed the rookie assists totals for both Mario Lemieux (57) and Teemu Selanne (56).
Sitting at 78 points, he could be the first rookie to score at least 80 points since Evgeni Malkin did in 2006-07.
