On the heels of their television partnership with Sportsnet, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League will play its inaugural all-star game at the Air Canada Centre on December 13. The event is one of the many CWHL games Sportsnet will broadcast over the next four years.
With the support of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the event will be free of charge. The rosters will consist of 40 of the top athletes in the league, including 19 Olympians and National team players.
“We are grateful to the Toronto Maple Leafs for their support and partnership, without which this extraordinary event would not be possible,” said Brenda Andress, CWHL commissioner. “The inaugural CWHL All Star game presents an incredible opportunity for the league to showcase its top talent both in person at the Air Canada Centre and through our broadcast partnership with Sportsnet.”
The 40 players were chosen based on input from the players, coaches and management in the five-team league. Fans will be able to vote online between November 29 and December 10 on who will captain the two teams. The captains will then select the first ten players on December 12 and the rest will be split up in a shinny-style stick-pull. The event will begin with a skills competition followed by two periods of hockey.
The CWHL is the highest level of professional women’s hockey and includes the Toronto Furies, Montreal Stars, Boston Blades, Calgary Inferno and Brampton Thunder.
