Ovechkin will play in KHL if there’s a lockout

Alex Ovechkin has made it clear what his plans are in the event of an NHL lockout.

The Washington Capitals superstar confirmed on Friday he will play in the KHL if there is a work stoppage.

“No one wants to be in a lockout but if (there is one) I’m going to play in the KHL,” Ovechkin told the Washington Post. “It’s not a surprise.”

Dynamo Moscow general manager Andrey Safronov had expressed interest in signing Ovechkin, who played with the club for four seasons from 2001-02 to 2004-05.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said if there isn’t a new CBA in place when the current agreement expires on Sept. 15, the league will lockout the players.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, and top assistant Steve Fehr met informally with Bettman and his deputy, Bill Daly on Friday.
