The Arizona State Sun Devils hockey team will hit the ice with new uniforms this season, and they got a little help from the state’s biggest NHL star in the unveiling.

Auston Matthews, who hails from Scottsdale, was part of the program’s video released on social media Thursday. In it, the Maple Leafs centre walks into the dressing room where a No. 34 Arizona State jersey is waiting for him in a stall. Matthews dons the jersey and then hits the ice — and we have to say, the jersey is a great look.

It’s been a big year for the Sun Devils, who qualified for their first-ever men’s NCAA Tournament as one of the nation’s top 16 teams. They were eliminated by Quinnipiac in the first round by a 2-1 score.

The program also has some NHL names attached to it. Mario Lemieux’s son, Austin, is entering his third year with the team and commitments have also been made by Shane Doan’s son Josh and Daniel Briere’s son Carson. The team also added former NHL netminder Eddie Lack to its coaching staff this summer.

Lest you think they may also add Matthews — he may be a bit too expensive…

The Sun Devils will first wear their new gold jerseys on October 5 in their season opener against Mercyhurst.
