Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen has been fined for diving, the NHL announced Wednesday.
The $2,000 penalty means it’s the Finnish winger’s second violation of NHL Rule 64, which was put in place to dissuade players from embellishing in an attempt to draw penalties.
Rantanen’s first violation occurred Oct. 16 in a game against the New York Rangers, according to the NHL. For that he received an official warning from the league but no fine.
The second citation stemmed from a play in the second period of a 6-3 Avalanche win over the Boston Bruins on Nov. 14.
Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron received two minutes for hooking and Rantanen was booked for an offsetting embellishment minor.
The $2,000 penalty will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The minor fine is the only real blemish on Rantanen’s stellar 2018-19 campaign. The 22-year-old currently leads the NHL in scoring with 32 points though 20 games played.
