Avalanche’s Grubauer out for Game 2, return unknown

Philipp Grubauer extended his right pad and stayed down, needing help off the ice. Pavel Francouz took over the net for the Avalanche against the Stars.

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Philipp Grubauer will not play in Game 2 of their second-round series with the Dallas Stars after he was injured in Game 1, head coach Jared Bednar told reporters Sunday.

Bednar said he is “not sure” how long Grubauer will remain unavailable to the Avalanche.

Grubauer appeared to have been injured early in the second period of the Avalanche’s first game against the Stars on Saturday. The netminder lay motionless on the ice for a couple of minutes before needing help to leave the ice. He was replaced with teammate Pavel Francouz.

The update after the game from Bednar was not promising either, as he said it was “bad news” that this was a tweak of a previous injury.

Grubauer, 28, has posted a 5-0-1 record with a 1.49 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage in six playoff starts for the Avalanche this season.

Francouz has started two games in this year’s playoffs, winning one and losing another, while registering a 1.02 GAA and a .958 SV%.

In addition to Grubauer, Bednar said defenceman Erik Johnson is likely out for Game 2 and forward Matt Calvert is listed as day-to-day.
