Sean Avery is set to resume his playing career after the Dallas Stars assigned the winger to the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League.
“I would like to thank Glen Sather and the Rangers organization for giving me the chance to resume my hockey career by affording me this opportunity with the Hartford Wolf Pack,” Sean Avery said in a statement. “I am looking forward to getting back on the ice, working my way back to the NHL and playing the game I love. While I appreciate the many interview requests, at this point in time, I would like to focus on hockey and will not be making any further statements while with the Wolf Pack.”
Avery cleared waivers Monday night after the National Hockey League cleared the way for his return to the league. Avery was suspended by the NHL on Dec. 2 and ordered to undergo anger management treatment after his insulting comments he made about his former girlfriends.
Avery is in the first year of a four-year deal with the Stars worth $15.5 million, but the Stars indicated after his suspension that he was not welcome back with the club. Recent speculation has Avery possibly winding up with the New York Rangers, most likely through a waiver claim. Avery played with the Rangers from 2006-08.
“Sean and the Dallas Stars approached me looking for an American Hockey League team for him to resume playing, and I am happy to provide him with the opportunity to continue his career,” Glen Sather said of the decision. “Sean was a good player for the Rangers during his time here and has worked extremely hard off the ice over the last two months. He remains under contract to and property of the Stars, therefore, any further comment would be inappropriate.”
