Bell rung: Leafs forward requires surgery

Sportsnet.ca — Maple Leafs winger Mark Bell will require surgery to repair a broken orbital bone suffered in a fight with Pittsburgh’s Ryan Malone Thursday night.

Bell will not be able to undergo the surgery until early next week because of major swelling around his eye. The Leafs forward missed Friday’s practice and will be out indefinitely.

The 27-year old suffered the injury when he squared off with Malone in the third period of the Penguins’ 6-2 victory in Pittsburgh.

Bell has two goals and five assists in 26 games. He began the season serving a 15-game suspension imposed after he pleaded no contest to a drunk driving charge in California. He will serve six months in jail for the charge when the NHL season ends.

He was acquired in the off-season from San Jose along with goaltender Vesa Toskala.
