Bernier gets third straight shutout, Marlies blank Comets

UTICA, N.Y. — Jonathan Bernier is now three for three on his American Hockey League conditioning assignment.

Bernier stopped all 27 shots his way for his third shutout in three starts as the Toronto Marlies edged the host Utica Comets 2-0 on Friday.

The 27-year-old netminder has turned away all 70 shots he’s faced since being loaned by the Maple Leafs on Dec. 2. He’s expected to make one more start before getting recalled to the NHL.

Richard Panik scored at 10:13 of the third period for the Marlies (19-5-1), who extended their win streak to four games, while Richard Clune added insurance into an empty net at 19:49.

Richard Bachman kicked out 29-of-30 shots for the Comets (11-10-3).

Both teams went 0 for 7 on the power play.
