Sportsnet.ca — Former Vancouver Canuck Todd Bertuzzi transferred ownership of his million-dollar home in Kitchener, Ont., to his wife Julie weeks after he broke the neck of Colorado Avalanche’s Steve Moore in an on-ice attack, a move Moore’s lawyers claim represents “fraudulent conveyance."
According to Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star, documents filed in Ontario Superior Court claim on April 13, 2004, the property jointly owned by the Bertuzzis was transferred solely to his wife in order to "make Bertuzzi creditor-proof to the greatest extent possible.” The property was recently assessed at $1.273 million. Moore’s lawyers are seeking to have the move voided by a judge.
Bertuzzi said in a statement the transfer was "made in good faith, in the course of organizing affairs … as husband and wife."
Moore was hospitalized with three broken vertebrae and deep facial cuts after the March 8, 2004 attack during a game between the Canucks and Avalanche in Vancouver.
Bertuzzi punched Moore from behind and drove him into the ice. Moore was carried out on a stretcher has not returned to the NHL since. He has a $15-million lawsuit against Bertuzzi for lost wages as well as pain and suffering.
