Columbus Blue Jackets centre Alexander Wennberg will miss Game 2 of his team’s opening-round series against the Washington Capitals.
As a result, Sonny Milano will draw into the Blue Jackets lineup on Sunday.
Wennberg suffered an upper-body injury in Game 1 on Thursday after a hit from Capitals forward Tom Wilson early in the third period. Wennberg left the game and did not return, while Wilson was handed a charging minor.
The hit marked a turning point in the game as the Blue Jackets tied the game at two on the ensuing power play before going on to win 4-3 in overtime.
“I’m just trying to finish my check there,” Wilson said, via the Washington Post. “I’m obviously not trying to take a penalty. That cost us the game. That’s a critical moment. I’ve got to be better and maybe pass up on that hit. We’ve got the lead there so maybe a big hit is not needed. It’s playoffs. Trying to finish your checks, and unfortunately I took a penalty. They capitalized on a couple of their opportunities there in the third period.”
In 66 games for the Blue Jackets, Wennberg racked up 35 points. The 23-year-old scored Columbus’s first goal of the post-season before leaving Thursday’s contest.
Milano featured in 55 games for Columbus this season, notching 14 goals and 22 points.
