It takes a special type of person to want to be a goaltender.

They willingly put their body in front of rubber pucks flying at inordinate speeds, and do so at their own risk.

On Friday at practice St. Louis Blues goaltender Brian Elliott got a stiff reminder of what can happen when you rely heavily on the effectiveness of your equipment. At some point during practice the 29-year-old took a hard shot in a delicate place, and he liberally posted the evidence on Twitter afterwards.

As you can see, what remains of Elliott’s jock did him some favours and saved him a whole world of hurt.

And he didn’t even hesitate to go back into the crease Saturday, making 24 saves and backstopping the Blues to a victory over his former team, the Ottawa Senators.

As we said, a special type of person.
