St. Louis Blues defenceman Carl Gunnarsson left Saturday’s game versus the New York Islanders after taking a brutal elbow to the face courtesy of Anders Lee.
Lee got is elbow up as he was bracing to make contact with Gunnarsson along the boards and ended up catching Gunnarsson right in the kisser. The hit obviously raises questions over whether Lee deliberately drove his elbow into Gunnarsson’s head.
Fire up the debate cannon, as the Blues and head coach Ken Hitchcock were left dumbfounded by the non-call on the play.
Hitchcock has every right to be miffed by the non-call, especially considering the fact that an official was just a few strides away from the play and had a clean look at it.
The Blues did not have an immediate update on Gunnarsson’s status. I’m not a doctor (I just play one on the internet), but Hitchcock noted that the defenceman was “in a little bit of trouble,” which may or may not be meant to insinuate that he could be dealing with symptoms of a concussion.
Gunnarsson has helped form an effective second pairing along with Kevin Shattenkirk this season, his first in St. Louis since coming over via trade with Toronto last summer. The 28-year old has one goal and five points in 21 games this season.
