Braden Holtby out vs. Ducks, won’t attempt to set wins record

Alex Ovechkin recorded a hat trick giving him 50 goals on the season and the Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues.

The Washington Capitals will not start goaltender Braden Holtby against the Anaheim Ducks Sunday night, effectively ending his bid to break Martin Brodeur’s single-season wins record.

The Capitals will start Philipp Grubauer instead as the team attempts to rest some key players ahead of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Brooks Orpik, John Carlson and Jay Beagle will all be scratched against the Ducks.

Holtby won his 48th game of the season Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues to tie Brodeur for the most ever won in a season.

Brodeur, now the Blues’ assistant general manager, set the record in the 2006-07 season with the New Jersey Devils.

Barring a relief appearance, Holtby will finish the season with a 48-9-7 record, a 2.20 goals-against average and .922 save percentage.
