The Boston Bruins will begin the 2018-19 season without one of the league’s top offensive defencemen.
Torey Krug sustained an injury to his left ankle in a Saturday pre-season game against the Philadelphia Flyers that has him in a walking boot.
General manager Don Sweeney told reporters Monday that Krug will be re-evaluated in three weeks, but added that his injury is unrelated to the broken ankle he spent the summer rehabilitating.
Krug fractured his left ankle in early May when he fell awkwardly into the boards during a playoff game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Krug led all Bruins blueliners with 59 points in 76 games a season ago. He ranks fifth in shots on goal, seventh in power-play points and 13th in total points among defencemen over the past five seasons.
The Bruins begin their season Wednesday on the road against the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals.
