Cameron: Tom Wilson penalty for Curtis Lazar hit was ‘the right call’

Watch as Tom Wilson gets ejected after a vicious hit from behind on Senators Curtis Lazar.

The Ottawa Senators and Washington Capitals had opposing takes on Tom Wilson‘s hit on Curtis Lazar that took place late in the third period during Wednesday night’s game.

While Lazar had the puck on his stuck, he was caught with a blindside hit from Wilson that initially appeared to be in the head.

Wilson was assessed a match penalty and was ejected from the game while a scrum immediately ensued following the play.

Senators head coach Dave Cameron did not have an update on Lazar’s status after the game but he was insistent during his post-game availability with reporters that the decision to eject Wilson was “the right call.”

However, the Capitals did not agree.

Wilson told reporters following the game that his primary point of contact was hip-on-hip and he did not hit Lazar in the head, while Washington head coach Barry Trotz said that he’s not even sure that the Capitals forward should have been penalized at all.

“They’re the best in the world but that one I think they probably want back,” Trotz told reporters.

Since Wilson received a match penalty, he could be subject to further discipline from the NHL.
