Canadiens’ Emelin not suspended for hit on Gionta

Alexei Emelin did not let old feelings stop him from checking former teammate Brian Gionta on Friday. But perhaps the Canadien could have kept the shoulder down to avoid Gionta's head.

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Alexei Emelin will not be suspended by the NHL after an illegal hit on Friday against the Buffalo Sabres.

Instead, the 28-year-old Russian will face a fine of over $11,000.

Emelin was assessed a minor penalty for an check to the head on Sabres captain Brian Gionta in the third period.

Buffalo head coach Ted Nolan voiced his displeasure after the game on the hit, citing that it could be career ending.

Buffalo ended up winning the game 2-1, but the two teams will play again tonight in Montreal.
