Canadiens looking to potentially move a defenceman

Ron MacLean, Nick Kypreos, Elliotte Friedman and Chris Johnston get you all caught up on the latest new in the NHL on this week's rendition of Saturday Headlines.

Shea Weber is nearing a return to the Montreal Canadiens lineup. This is good news for the team, however it does make the back end even more crowded than it already is.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday during the Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada that this could mean the Canadiens could look to potentially move a defenceman.

“Earlier this year, Marc Bergevin tried to make a move when he had forwards coming back [from injury],” Friedman said. “He didn’t. They couldn’t. They lost Jacob De La Rose on waivers. With Shea Weber getting closer I think they’re trying similar defensively to see if there’s a body they can move out for the logjam.”

Montreal currently has eight blueliners on its active roster. They are: Jeff Petry, Jordie Benn, David Schlemko, Noah Juulsen, Xavier Ouellet, Victor Mete, Mike Reilly and Karl Alzner.
