The Montreal Canadiens placed forward Nikita Scherbak on waivers Saturday, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Montreal had attempted to trade the 22-year-old, as per Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, but could not find a partner.

The 26th overall selection in the 2014 draft, Scherbak has not featured in an NHL game this season. The Moscow native has suited up in five contests for the AHL’s Laval Rocket, scoring one goal.

Scherbak has five goals, seven points and eight penalty minutes in 29 career NHL games for the Canadiens – 26 of which came last season.
