Canucks recall Patrick Wiercioch, Thatcher Demko from AHL

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Troy Stecher heads to the dressing room and appears to be in some discomfort after a hard working shift against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Vancouver Canucks have recalled defenceman Patrick Wiercioch and goaltender Thatcher Demko from the Utica Comets of the AHL.

Wiercioch will slot into the lineup after defenceman Troy Stecher suffered a lower-body injury in Sunday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings. According to Canucks coach Travis Green, Stecher was sent home from the team’s current road trip for further tests.

This is Wiercioch’s first season with the Canucks. In 268 games with the Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche, he has 16 goals and 74 points.

Demko, 21, is the team’s top goaltending prospect. So far this season in the AHL, he has a 3-1-0 record with a 1.75 goals against average.

The Canucks return to action Tuesday when they visit the Minnesota Wild.
