The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Patrick Wiercioch to a one-year contract, the team announced on Saturday.

“Patrick has excellent mobility for a player his size and possesses a big shot from the point,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning said in a team statement. “He’ll add to our depth on the blue line and we’re excited to give him the opportunity to play for his hometown team.”

Wiercioch appeared in 57 games for the Avalanche in 2016-17, recording four goals and 12 points along with 23 penalty minutes.

The 26-year-old was selected in the second round (42nd overall) by the Ottawa Senators in the 2008 NHL Draft.
